Research purpose. To investigate the changes of liver structure in rats in case of secondhand tobacco smoke combined with prolonged administration of monosodium glutamate in age aspect. Object and research methods. Experiments were performed on 48 white male mature and immature rats, which were kept on a standard vivarium diet. Each group of animals was divided into 3 subgroups: I – rats with modelled secondhand tobacco smoke (n=8); ІІ – rats, which were injected with monosodium glutamate (n=8); III – rats with modelled secondhand tobacco smoke combined with the monosodium glutamate injection (n=8). Histological specimens were examined using a MIKROmed SEO SCAN optical microscope and photo-documented using a Vision CCD Camera. Research results and their discussion. In case of secondhand tobacco smoking in mature rats, we have established disturbed liver architecture, hemorrhages in the central veins, areas of necrosis, vacuolation and increased inflammatory cells infiltration. After prolonged administration of monosodium glutamate, we have established a moderate structural changes of the parenchymatous component. The combination of secondhand tobacco smoke and monosodium glutamate administration was accompanied by more pronounced changes in liver structure. In immature rats morphological structure of the liver changed more pronounced. Conclusion. Therefore, exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke, monosodium glutamate, and their combined action cause in the liver of mature and immature rats a complex of structural changes characterized by disorders of hemomicrocirculation and dystrophic, degenerative, necrotic, and inflammatory changes of the parenchymatous. In age aspect, the most pronounced changes occur in the liver of immature rats under the condition of secondhand tobacco smoke combined with prolonged administration of monosodium glutamate. Minimal structural changes have been established in the liver of mature rats with long-term administration of monosodium glutamate.
