Diagnosis, treatment and prevention of neoplasms of the maxillofacial area are seen as important and challenging for oral and maxillofacial surgeons and oncologists. Although the head and neck make up of about 9% out of the total body surface, pathological entities developing in the maxillofacial area are heterogenous in their genesis that can be explained by the fact that maxillofacial organs and tissues originate from three distinct germ layers. There are some tumours typical for this area only (odontogenic tumours). The prognosis for odontogenic tumours is of great clinical and scientific interest. This is mainly determined by the rate of neoplasm progression and metastasis spreading. Therefore, pathohistological diagnosis is critical in selecting treatment modalities, management and prognosis of odontogenic tumours. This article presents the results of the study of tumours of the maxillofacial area, describes the most common odontogenic tumours that are characterized by a benign course. Specimens of tissues with atypism were fixed in a 10% buffered formalin solution. Then, they were cut and stained with standard hematoxylin-eosin; histochemical methods were applied. Histological studies were carried out according to the instructions set forth in the manuals on histological and histochemical techniques. Anatomical, clinical and morphological data were focused on during the studies. Based on the results of histological and histochemical investigations of maxillofacial tumours, comparison with embryogenesis, we determined the histological development (histogenesis) of their different types. In addition to the histological characteristics of tumours, this investigation enables to draw conclusions about the quality of the operation. Studying the resection margins, specifying the tumour local stage through prolonged follow-up will help to predict the degree of malignancy for each type of tumour. This study emphasizes the paramount necessity for clinicians in improving the quality in diagnosis of neoplasms and active interest towards the issues.
