Abstract. The work is devoted to the review of modern data on morpho- and histogenesis of superficial muscles of the neck in the prenatal period of human ontogenesis. The large proportion of neck abnormalities among congenital neonatal pathology encourages scientists to study in more detail the features of the bookmark, syntopic relationships and variants of the structure of the superficial muscles of the neck. Data on the ontogenetic structural organization of the structure of the neck and in particular the muscles of the neck, provided by scientific anatomists, can be used not only in modern pediatric surgery, but also in maxillofacial surgery and surgical dentistry. The infrahyoideus muscles are developed the firsts on the neck during the 6th week of fetal development, which is considered to be the first critical period in which structure and defect variants may occur. The second critical period is the 8th week of fetal development, when the sternoclеidomastoid muscle is formed. The sternoclеidomastoid muscle has the most structural variants in clavicular origin, which can lead to diagnostic errors or surgical complications. The formation of layer of the cervical fascia (superficial, pretracheal and prevertebral) depends on the origin and morphological development of the respective muscle groups of the cervical region. The mylohyoid muscle and the anterior belly digastric develop from the mesenchyme of the first gill arch, the posterior belly digastric and the stylohyoid muscle from the second gill arch, sternoclеidomastoid and trapezius muscles – from the mesenchyme III-V gill arches. The following muscles are formed from the ventral parts of the myotomes: sternohyoid, sternothyroid, omohyoid and thyrohyoid muscles; anterior, middle and posterior scalene, longus colli, longus capitis. According to the literature, little-studied and unsystematized data on the morphometric parameters of the superficial muscles of the neck, the variability of stages and dynamics of its development, which is the basis for the study of congenital malformations of the neck and necessitates their further anatomical study
